The boat is a didi MK3 part of the Mini 650 class.
The mini 650 class was created to run the transatlantic yacht race that starts in France and ends in Brazil covering over 4,000 miles.
The Mini 6.50 is very short for its intended trans-Atlantic ocean use and is beamy, being nearly half as wide as it is long (6.5m long and 3.0m wide). Its width carries to the stern, allowing the craft to plane extremely fast; Minis are capable of sailing as fast as 25 knots.
The most noticable caracteristic of the MK3 mini we are building is the fact that its structure is made of plywood. Indeed most of the mini class boats today are made of Fiberglass or Carbonfiber. For the last couple of years, Plywood material was left appart in benefit of synthetic materials but it's now back in many shipyards all over the world. This natural composite material offers lots of benefits such as its lightweight, durability, costeficiency and it also allows fast building without the use of moulding.
In addition wood is a sustainable material and the idea of building a hightech sailracer with such caracteristics is part of the challenge!
